The Sailing Committee are pleased to announce the dates of club organised sailing events in 2018. Please read on for details of the:
Bookings for Racing, Training and Introductory Sails are now open.
Summer Cruise, Racing and Training are restricted to full members, while Introductory Sails are aimed at potential members who will become temporary members for a month to enable them to participate.
The planned 2018 Summer Cruise will be from our base in Haslar Marina, around Cornwall and along the West Coast of the UK to Oban, returning by the same route. It will start in early June and finish in late August - 12 weeks in total.
Inshore skippers: can cruise for a week from Largs/Troon in week 8 or from Oban in week 6
Coastal skippers: have a larger area in above and can also cruise on week 1 and 12 from Gosport to Falmouth, and weeks 5 and 7 From Largs/Troon to Oban
Offshore skippers: are required for some legs. If you have Inshore and Coastal skippers on your leg then please involve them by being skipper for some passages.
Also skipper assessors and trainers are onboard on weeks, 1, 2, 4, 5 and 9 and these could be upgrade passages and coaching for our less experienced skippers.
Bookings are open now and have been since 0900 on Saturday 13th January 2018 and must be made by email to the Bookings Officer (firstname.lastname@example.org). Places will be allocated strictly in the order that they are received, based on the time stamp of the email.
Skippers who have previously expressed interest in particular weeks need to book too or they could lose that week. If anyone skipper or crew books for another member than that member must be copied on the email. The only exceptions are when the member has no email address.
As usual with the Summer Cruise, a £100 deposit per person per week is required to confirm your booking and should be paid immediately after the Bookings Officer replies to confirm your place. If you have not paid the deposit within 3 days of being offered a place, it will be offered to the next member on the list. Each member must confirm their own place by paying the deposit.
Cost will be normal sailing fees (five summer weekdays and two summer weekend days) plus a small supplement towards the cost of charts. Places are likely to be oversubscribed, so please remember before booking that you will be liable for the full cost if you cancel with less than four weeks notice and your deposit will only be refunded if your cancelled place is filled by another member - or, of course, if the cruise is cancelled by the club.
Booking will open for full members only. This is to ensure priority in case of being over-subscribed. Once it is clear that there may be spaces then booking for temporary members and associated members will be allowed. A separate notice will go out to all members when and if this situation arises.
You can read more about each week of the cruise by clicking the individual links in the table below, and change over times are 6pm on Saturday afternoon with the exception of the first and last week where the crew can book an extra day, unless the bosun needs some preperation time on the 2nd June. If you have any questions please contact Judith Hankey (email@example.com)

As you can see the cruise has been popular with skipers but there are lots of crew spaces left, possibly including the role of mate if you ask the skipper.
Please refer to the Bookings Calendar to check crew already booked and available berths remaining.
We are entering Spellbinder (or preferably her replacement) in the RORC series again in 2018, but truncated to allow for her absence on the summer cruise. There is also the Round the Island (on Quartette) and the John Lewis Regatta for those that might prefer shorter races or just ‘around the cans’.
For those who have not raced before, PYC takes a relaxed approach to racing (more cruising quickly) and there is certainly no sitting on the lee rail for our crews. We tailor our approach to racing to suit the needs of the individual crew member so if you are thinking of giving it a go then now is a good time to step forward. It is a great way to learn new skills, or strengthen old ones, that you can apply to the rest of your sailing career.
Finally, although it is some way off, we are already starting to think about a Fastnet campaign for 2019 so if you fancy the challenge, 2018 is a good year to start building up some racing experience.

We are asking for deposits to be paid to confirm your training place at a rate of £20 per day, so a 2 day course will require a deposit of £40 and a 5 day course will require £100 to confirm your place. If you cancel, this deposit will only be returned if your place is filled and more details are available in our booking terms and conditions.
If you wish to develop your skippering skills then do read our skipper manual and read this article for more information. Get to know our boats and practise all the skippering activities under the tutelage of the PYC skipper you are sailing with.
We are planning two introductory sailing days each month from March to September so that new members do not have to wait too long to get out for a sail.
Any potential new members who wish to participate in a trial sail will join PYC for a one month Introductory Membership, which starts on the first day they sail with us. If, as we hope, they enjoy the experience they can upgrade to full membership, proposed and seconded by the skipper and mate on the Introductory Sail.
The format of Introductory Sails will depend on the number of participants. If demand is very high we will offer a one-day sail, returning to Haslar on the evening of the first day, so that a different crew can go out on the second day. As demand decreases we can offer Introductory Members the opportunity to participate in both days, and if we still have available berths offer them to existing members. If we have no demand at all in a given month we will release the booking for normal club sails.
The cost of an Introductory Sail is the normal sailing fee, plus introductory membership fee (payable in advance) and the usual share of variable costs (any marina, provisions and fuel, payable to the skipper in arrears). Introductory Members will be able to participate in any other sailing (but not training) during their month of membership, but won't be able to book it until they have completed their introductory sail - so an opportunity for Introductory Members to fill last minute spaces.
